Applying Feedback to Editing

When we first showed a rough draft of our first bits of footage, as well as our proposed storyboard, the feedback was to add in more elements of violence, and too have the story focus on physical and mental abuse, rather than just mental abuse alone.
Following this we looked at the trailer for the 2011 British drama film Tyrannosaur, as the story focuses on a violent male, played by Peter Mullen, as well as a physical abusive relationship between the actors Olivia Colman and Edie Marsan:

The trailer only suggests at the abusive relationship within the story through building up shots of violent actions, quick editing, the dull colour palette, make up and dark lighting.

Therefore, after watching this we added in more shots that suggest at the abusive relationship, as well as the violence from the character Tom. We also changed the script for our voiceovers to add in more sympathy for the character of Alex, as well as to create her to be more vulnerable in comparison to Tom:

Mood Video

Connie created a mood video to ensure that we knew we always had something to come back to if we felt like we were straying from our original ideas.

Sound Palette

We put together a selection of songs and sound effects that we feel represent our intended vibe of our film trailer:

Colour Palette

Taking inspiration from Buzzfeed's article titled: 'Can you guess the Disney movie from just the colour scheme?'...

...we decided to create a colour scheme that represents our film.

Films with similar colour palettes include:
'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' which focuses on dark colours, such as blacks, dark blues, browns and dark oranges.
'The Theory of Everything' trailer also involves dark blues and browns, but also has softer orange tones, creating a nostalgic vibe.

9 Key Frame Analysis

500 DAYS OF SUMMER

The trailer for '500 Days of Summer' displays the conventions of a typical romance film:
- character establishment of a girl and a boy
- indication of their relationship through camera shots
- use of upbeat music to show an equilibrium, and then a more downbeat track to upset it
- lack of lighting in love scenes, indication of passion
- shots of the couple in love: running, laughing, holding hands, kissing

Voice Casting: Again

When voice testing people the first time round we were unsure on whether we liked any of the voices of the people we tested and felt like we needed to test a larger group of people, in order to make sure the voice heard in the trailer had the right levels of emotion to make the audience engage with the trailer.

Voiceover Casting

At the beginning and end of our trailer our main protagonist, Alex, speaks in a voiceover, so therefore we thought we would test out a couple of people to try and get the right voice, as for the rest of the trailer our main actor, Lily, does not speak any dialogue.

Music for our Film Trailer

Through being inspired by Will Darbyshire's videos we came across the music artist Tom Rosenthal. Tom is an independent music artist who we contacted asking whether we could use a couple of his tracks within our piece as we felt it would add to the style of our piece. Below is the email we sent and his reply including the permission he gave us to use his music:

Editing Schedule

While we were continually tweaking our film trailer throughout the editing process, below are key dates in our editing schedule:

Behind the Scenes

Behind the scenes from our filming day on 11th December:

Model release forms

As our two main protagonists, as well as a couple of our extras, were under 18 we needed to get a parent or guardian's approval for them to feature in our trailer, on our website as well as on our poster:

Call Sheet for Filming Days

We changed our filming days from the 9th and the 11th of December to just filming on the 11th. This was due to one of our actors not being able to make the 9th, and we realised that if we filmed on the whole day then we would be able to get all of our footage.

Timelapse Timetable

We created a timetable for what our main protagonist should do during the time-lapse at the beginning of our film trailer.

Health and Safety

Before filming we needed to come up with any potential hazards that may put us, our actors, or other people in danger:

Location Recce: Beach

Natasha took the photos below of the beach that we hope to film at for part of our film trailer:

Location Recce - The House

In our storyline we see the main protagonist and her friend at her house on the roof and by the windows. Therefore we needed a house that had symmetrical windows to achieve the shot we were looking for as well as access to a roof. Both of these are available at Natasha's house, so we decided the main protagonist's house will be at Natasha's.

Time Lapse Location

We want the start of our film trailer to open with a time lapse of a girl walking and standing beside a tree. We need the location to be somewhere we can access everyday to ensure the time lapse is successful and that we capture the changing of seasons.

Lighting Test Footage

We decided to complete some test footage on the different scenes that used interesting lighting. We knew these scenes would have to be filmed at night and so felt it necessary to compile footage together before we started filming to make sure that we could achieve the look we wanted, with clear visibility.

Test Footage - Casting of Tom

We needed to compile some test footage for one of main characters- Tom. We decided to get Ryan to try out the angry scene of Tom yelling at Alex in the car to see if he was suitable to cast. We tried to the scene multiple times to see if he could take direction.

Film Title Name

We discussed possible title names for our film and decided on 'When the Tide Comes In"

'When the Tide Comes In' links to our strong theme of water throughout our trailer, poster and website, solidifying the idea of brand cohesion. The idea of a tide coming in represents the panic that Alex feels about being in her relationship with Tom, as well as links to the potential thought of being drowned, which is what she feels like with Tom.

Audience Expectations of Romance Films

We interviewed a range of people to find out what audience's expect from romance films to make sure our trailer is catered towards them:

From this we found that audiences expect to see some sort of turmoil within a romance film, typically from a younger couple, and that they typically see rural location such as beaches giving a sense of isolation, as it is their story.

Changes in Story

Following our feedback on our storyboard we decided to change our genre and narrative to make the ending more effective, while still keeping the idea to make our film trailer heavily stylised. We wanted to still include a boy and a girl as the two main characters, but just change their relationship.
Below is our new narrative for the whole story of our film:

Relationship between Film and Music Videos

We decided to research into the relationship between music videos and film, due to our film trailer having strong similarities.

Taking Inspiration from Famous Shots

As a class we looked at Buzzfeed's 129 Of The Most Beautiful Shots In Movie History and found a couple of shots that we found inspirational:

Personally, the shot I took most inspiration from was the shot from 'Requiem for a Dream' as I believe it would be simple to recreate in our film narrative - creating a homage to the film. The plot of the film revolves around how happiness is found and lost, as well as exploring how humans long to connect and feel love. This links to our plot due to the main protagonist losing her father and how that affects her, and about her growing up and learning to deal with loss and love.

Inspiration: Will Darbyshire Videos

We found that the YouTuber Will Darbyshire created short films in the style that we would like to replicate. The use of cinematography, particularly in his film California, involves the use of the lighting technique bokeh, and the softness of the clips, and the colour palette are similar to what we want to achieve stylistically. I analysed a couple of his YouTube videos down below:

Léon: The Professional

If I were to re-make the trailer for 'Léon' I would include all the high action moments, particularly scenes involving guns and shooting. These scenes would then be juxtaposed with a narration from Gary Oldman in the scene where he is about to go in and kill Mathilda's father, called the 'Noon' scene.

"I like these calm moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven. Can you hear it? It's like when your put your head to the grass, you can hear them crawling, and you can hear the insects. Do you like Beethoven?"
"Couldn't really say"
"I'm gonna play you some"

The scenes from the movie would be in slow motion and would be paired with a Beethoven track when Oldman isn't speaking. The end of the trailer would fade in with the title:

Theatrical Storyboard & Trailer

The Grand Budapest Hotel

A 2014 comedy written and directed by Wes Anderson with cinematographer Robert Yeomen ,where the narrative takes the form of a story within a story within a story within a story.
The majority of the film was filmed in Germany where Anderson shot the film in three aspects ratios: 1.37.1 for the 1930s, 1.85.1 for the 1980s and 2.40.1 for the 1960s.

The 1930s shot include more pinks and reds in the colour palette which are cast over the image creating a harsher light, compared to the 1960s where the colour palette includes more yellows and oranges making the image look softer.

Anderson is known for creating symmetrical frames, particularly in the Grand Budapest Hotel where he shows actual frames in the frame of the shot itself. By having symmetrical shots it meant that groups of people were shown through layering within the frame, creating interesting visuals.
